The honest version: the first winter is quieter than you expect, the rental market moves fast, and you will drive further for specialist healthcare than you did in Auckland or Wellington.
The other honest version: within a year, most people we spoke to had stopped counting the trade-offs. Their kids bike to school. Their weekends contain more than recovery. They know the name of someone at the café.
Settling in is a civic skill, and Tauranga is unusually good at it, largely because so many people here arrived from somewhere else and remember exactly how it felt.
