The harbour, the heartbeat of our city

Kiwifruit leaves through here. So does timber, so does most of the upper North Island's imported freight. The container gantries are visible from the beach, and residents have long since stopped finding that strange.

What has grown around the port is more interesting than the port itself: marine engineering firms, cold-chain logistics specialists, horticultural technology companies solving problems that only exist at scale, and a construction sector building a city centre at the same time as the suburbs around it.

The regional economic story is not that Tauranga is cheap. It is that the supply chain, the growing season, the labour market and the lifestyle sit inside the same forty-minute radius.
